Three months ago, I put on my big girl panties and decided it was time to potty train Brooklynn. At the time, she was three months away from turning three. I did the three day method with her and IT WORKED! She caught on extremely fast and hasn’t had many accidents (#1 that is…) at all in the last few months. #2 is a different story, but we will get there eventually!
Three things I’ve learned three months after potty training:
- Trust your mama instincts. I had a lot of people tell me that the method we used wasn’t going to work, or that we shouldn’t put underwear on her, or that we should only put underwear on at night, and the list goes on. I had a really hard time even deciding what we were going to do, but in the end, I trusted my gut and did what I thought would be best for Brooke! And guess what, it worked! - Be persistent. DO NOT GIVE UP! There were days were I wasn’t feeling well or was feeling overwhelmed with B’s lack of progress. I could have easily put a diaper on her and called it quits because it was too much. But I didn’t, and I am so glad I kept with it! It would’ve confused her and set her back.
- Don’t take it TOO seriously. This one is hard for me. When Brooklynn had rough days and pooped on the ground, I wanted to pull my hair out. I thought, “why is she doing this to herself?” “Why doesn’t she get it?” “Why is it taking her so long to poop on the toilet?” But the truth of the matter is… She will get it. Soon. And I don’t want to waste these precious moments being frustrated or upset. She is learning and she is trying! (She still struggles with pooping on the toilet, but her pediatrician reassured us that this is 100% normal and we are doing all the right things to help her!)
If you’ve been around The Garcia Diaries before, you know I’m a big fan of Huggies Pull-Ups. They are the only brand that keeps Brooklynn dry at night. We shop at Walmart Neighborhood Market and they have everything we need as far as diapers and wipes for my two younger babes and Pull-Ups for Brooklynn! She loves that she gets to pick out her favorite Disney characters on her Pull-Ups, which is usually Doc McStuffins!
